Our Calculations

  • Briar Chapel residents fall within the upper-middle to upper-class

    • Although there is limited research directly measuring the amount of unused electronics owned by Americans by income level, existing research suggests there is still a positive association with class and the amount of unused devices had

  • As such, we can assume that Briar Chapel Residents may reasonably be expected to own at least as much unused electronic equipment as the average American adult.

  • A MPB study says the average US adult has $2,459 worth of unused gear. Because this figure may be influenced by sampling and marketing purposes, we used a conservative one-fourth of the reported value ($614.75 per adult) for our estimate.

  • Using the 2020 Briar Chapel Census, approximately 5,108 residents make up Briar Chapel, 72.4% of which are adults, which totals to 3,698 adult residents

  • Applying the conservative estimate of $614.75 per adult: 3,698 adult residents × $614.75 of unused electronics per resident = $2,273,345.50 in potential impact (subtracting the $25,000 in impact from last year results in $2,248,345.50)

  • This is a very rough estimate yet a conservative one
